Summer 2023

Year 5 News 07.07.23

Sports Day was a huge success this year; thank you to everyone who spectated and cheered the children on, they all had a wonderful day!

The children had an amazing time with Mrs Sanders for their ‘move-up day’ where they got a little insight into what life will be like in year 6 next year. They also explored Banksy’s extravagant talents including spray painting graffiti.

In English, we are focusing on the book Yusra Swims by Julie Abery which explores the extraordinary story of a young refugee. We are writing to discuss where the children are preparing their balanced argument as to whether the Yusra Swimmers should use their platform to raise awareness of the refugee plight

In maths, the children have been developing their problem-solving skills involving addition and subtraction multi-step problems in contexts and deciding which operations and methods to use and why.

Well done year 5 on another busy week!

Year 5 News

This week, we thoroughly enjoyed participating in the Brake’s Kids Walk! As a school, we walked 1 mile around the village of Ellington to shout out for our children’s right to make healthy journeys every day.

In English, we are currently revisiting the story of the Nowhere Emporium by Ross Mackenzie. The time travelling shop offers wonderful and magical opportunities to those around the world. We will be creating a character description of the story’s evil antagonist – Vindictus Sharpe!

In maths, we are focusing on converting units where we are using our knowledge of multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1,00o to convert between mm, cm, m and km. We will soon be progressing to volume using millilitres and litres and mass using grams and kilograms.

In science, the children created a time line to display their understanding of the stages of a human life. We recently explored the average height of boys and girls from 0-12 months. The children worked extremely hard to display this data in a line graph and a bar chart.

Well done year 5 on another busy week!

Year 5 News

This week, we thoroughly enjoyed watching the year 3 and 4 dress rehearsal for their Bee Musical Performance.

In English, we revisited the story of War Horse where are now writing our detailed setting description of No-Man’s Land. The children have come up with excellent descriptions based our senses. They have been writing from Joey’s perspective, the main horse in the story. By getting into character, the children have produced wonderful pieces of work.

In maths, we are focusing on properties of shape where we have been identifying interior angles within a quadrilateral. The children will be using protractors to draw their own angles whilst also using their knowledge of angles within a full turn and on a straight line to calculate missing angles.

In science, the children carried out an experiment to investigate whether materials were electrical insulators or electrical conductors. They cleverly used their knowledge of circuits to connect batteries, wires and bulbs. Our next experiment will involve investigating various materials to test if they are soluble or insoluble.

In geography, we have been learning all about the Great Barrier Reef and its significance in our world today. The children produced interesting fact files, outlining its importance and how we can protect it.

Well done year 5 on another busy week!

Year 5 News

We had a wonderful time on our class trip to the Discovery Museum in Newcastle. During our scientific workshop, we used our knowledge of forces to build air powered rocket cars where we then measured the distance, speed and time. We then explored the museum in the afternoon and learnt new information through interactive activities.

In English, we have based our writing on the animation video ‘Road’s End’ where will be publishing our own newspaper report. We have been exploring various newspapers to gather ideas for our own writing. The children enjoyed acting as reporters, paramedics, police and fire fighters in order to gather quotations to include in our writing.

In maths, we have finished off our fractions unit and now progressed onto percentages. We have been understanding the meaning of percentages, calculating percentages of amounts and finding the link between fraction, decimals and percentages.

The children recapped their knowledge on the water cycle before we dived deeper into our new geography topic; Oceans of The World. We have been learning about the five main oceans and listing interesting facts about each one. Over the next few weeks we will be investigating why oceans are so important and what the population can do to protect our oceans.
