Week 7 in Reception
Wow! Week 7 already! Where has that time gone. This week in Reception we have been continuing our learning with the Little Red Hen. We thought of different describing words for the characters in our story. We came up with lots of super words like resilient, brave and lazy. It was our turn to be the Little Red Hen and the children jumped at the chance to make some bread. They followed the instructions well and the bread came out the oven good to eat (Surprising as Mrs Milne isn't the best of cooks!) We then had a go at spreading either jam or butter which lots of the children found tricky.
In Maths, we matched numerals to objects. We tried our best to identify the number, write the number and match the number. Lots of us used our subitising skills which is brilliant!
In Art, we learnt about printing and the children decided whether to use rectangles or circles to print the background to their finished piece in art. I can't wait to show you the finished product.
We've also been practising our Harvest songs lots and we have got so good at them now I know you'll be blown away next Friday!
Week 6 in Reception
What a very busy week again in Reception. We introduced our new core story 'The Little Red Hen!' The children really enjoyed adding actions to our story to help us to re-tell it and couldn't believe the characters did not help the Little Red Hen! After we listened to the story, we helped to create a story map of the story. The children showed their knowledge of the story well. We then acted out the story in the hall and freeze framed different parts of our story. I think you'll agree they are super actors.
In maths, we've been focusing on money. We have looked at 1p and what value it holds. We then 'paid' for things in Little Red Hen's cafe using real money! The children have really enjoyed this and used their maths knowledge well. They worked in pairs to pay for the different things and worked out how much they would have left. We looked at problem solving questions together too. The children thought they didn't have enough to buy something for 4p if they had 5p. We looked at the question on a number frame and used the number line to help us. We then figured out that 4p was less than 5p so we could still buy the item and have some money left over too!
In art, we did some observational drawings of pumpkins. We talked about how we had to really look at the detail on the pumpkin and add in to our drawing. This helps us to build up to drawing a self portrait of ourselves.
The hit of the week had to be the conker run challenge! So much so the children wanted to carry on with this the rest of the week. The children first explored using the resources in our garden to create a conker run. They used their problem solving to work out that the higher up the conker run went the further the conker went. Then it was time to create our own using kitchen rolls and masking tape. The designs the children came up with were fab. They really enjoyed planning and reviewing their conker runs which is a really important skill to learn! Me and Miss Henderson were so impressed with our Happy Hippo attitudes.
Week 5 in Reception
The children had lots of fun guessing the baby pictures this week so much so we've still got a couple to do and they've requested a baby picture book for the reading area, something Mrs Milne is working hard to sort out. The children loved coming to the front to see how they've changed from being a baby. We had a good go at writing some cvc words that related to babies like nap, bib, cot.
It rained quite a lot last week but that didn't stop us from going outside. We had to stay under the canopy so we didn't slip so we decided to make a tent. The children were teamwork tigers when they were helping each other to gather the bits. Some of the poles kept falling down so we came up with the idea to get some pegs and blocks to help it stay up. We decided to put a bit of guttering in the middle to make it even bigger. They then requested torches and were really good at taking turns with them. They told different stories in the tent as well as taking colouring in and figures under there too. They had so much fun!
Thank you again for your support with our first stay and do session of the year. The children loved having you share their learning with them and i hope it helped you to see what they have been getting up to at school so far!
Week 4 in Reception
What a week!! It is lovely to look back at these photographs and see how far we've come in such a short space of time. The children being fantastic teamwork tigers, having fun and being persevering parrots when things become slightly tricky.
This week, the children labelled the parts of their body using initial sounds. We also had lots of fun drawing bodies outside and labelling them. It was even more fun when we figured out we could draw around each other!! It was a very exciting day in the garden on Wednesday when we investigated some dying sunflowers and realised there were seeds we could harvest for next year. We used our learning in Nursery to help us understand where the sunflowers are in their life-cycle. Some children talked about how it was too cold for them to survive because winter is coming! I was very impressed with this knowledge. Some children thought they could plant the seeds now but we unpicked why Autumn wouldn't be the best time to plant seeds.
We also talked about our favourite body parts and give reasons as to why. Lots of us liked our arms and legs because it helps us to move around.
We also went on a 2-d shape hunt outside. I was so impressed with the children's retained knowledge on 2-d shapes!
It has been a busy week but one filled with laughter and learning! The best kind!
Well done Reception!
Week 3 in Reception
Reception are beginning to settle well into their routines and have worked hard this week. This week we begun our phonics lessons. The children showed Fred their good listening skills and recapped/learnt our sounds of the week. We then used our new phonics books to write the sounds. We tried really hard with this and lots of us were persevering parrots as it was a little tricky at times!
We also learnt about the Zones of Regulation through our Colour Monster story (We have adapted it at school to match the zones so it is a little different to the original colour monster story!) We then spotted lots of different footprints out in our garden. We thought a colour monster had been to visit. We thought he was a little mixed up as there were lots of different colours. We decided to write messages and signs for the colour monster to ask how he was feeling. We used different coloured chalks and pens and popped them up around our outdoor garden. Lots of us practised our new sound 'm' during this time. The colour monster then wrote the children a letter to ask if they could help him sort his feelings out. We made different coloured jars and learnt new names for our feelings. We also learnt some strategies on how to calm down if we are in the Red Zone or strategies to cheer us up if we are in the Blue Zone!
In maths, we've been sorting buttons and recapping repeating patterns. I was such a Proud Peacock as everyone created a repeating pattern independently! Our number of the week is 1 so we went on a number hunt around school to see if we could spot different ways of making 1.
There was no forest school today as we went to listen to the Pearl African Choir. I was so proud of Reception as they attended their first whole school assembly and sat beautifully all the way through. They listened so well and joined in too! When I asked the children what they thought about the choir there were lots of positive responses.
Lots of us enjoyed watching them dance
Lots of us enjoyed making music with the African drums.
Some of us said it was a little loud but they still enjoyed it.
Lastly, we enjoyed a brilliant PE lesson with Charlie this week. The children really focussed on their listening skills to ensure we are calm and safe in PE as well as achieving the goals set out in our lesson. Charlie said they worked so hard in PE and their listening skills had improved lots already! I hope we can keep up the good work for next week Reception!!
Another great week Reception!!
Week 2 in Reception
We’ve had a fantastic week in Reception. This week we have been learning about our school values and how they help us to learn. We were set a Teamwork Tiger and a Persevering Parrot challenge to see if we could make a water shoot long enough to fill the bucket. We all worked really hard and tried our very best! Even when it was tricky we didn't give up! What superstars! We have also been listening to our Pete the Cat story and had a go at drawing him. We wondered what would happen when we pressed our magic letter. Lots of thought Pete the Cat's shoes would change colour! We had fun using crayons to create rubbings of bark and leaves for our Art activity.
The children were super excited today! They declared it would be such a fun day because it was Forest School and PE! It was our first time at Forest School too. We listened well to the Colour Monster story and matched it to the Zones of Regulation. We then created our own feeling faces using natural materials we found in our Wildlife Garden. This was lots of fun! (I will add these pictures on Monday as Mrs Redpath was busy with the iPad after school!)
This afternoon, we tried our best to listen carefully to Charlie in PE.
I know we will have another great week next week! Also, it will be the start of our formal phonics teaching so homework will be on its way home next week to support with this!
Don't forgot our School Hero Learning Challenge and I hope you all have a lovely weekend!
