Autumn 2025

Year 2 News September 2025

Year 2 have had a fantastic start to the new school year, it has been wonderful to see them looking so smart in their uniforms. They have settled really well into the new routines of Year 2 and are taking it all in their stride.

In English, we have started our first unit of writing based on the story ‘Meerkat Mail’ by Emily Gravett. We have been creating character description full of adjectives and expanded noun phrases to describe Sunny the meerkat. We have also been focusing heavily on punctuation and handwriting as we get back into the swing of writing after six weeks off!

In Maths, we have been recapping our place value knowledge and skills, working hard on understanding number up to 100. We have also been writing numbers in words and looking at the tens and ones in any 2-digit number.

We have started lots of new units across other subjects. In Science, we have begun our unit ‘Animals’ and their needs for survival’. So far, we have looked at the needs of mammals where we grouped mammals based on their needs. This week we explored the needs of birds and made some wonderful bird feeders to try and encourage birds to visit our school grounds.

In History, we have learned about schools in the past and how they have changed. So far we have compared schools within living memory to our school now. Next we will look at schools in the Victorian era and decide if we would like to go to school during that time or not. Please talk about what school was like when you went with your child and if grandparents could join the conversation that would be even better!

Outside of our classroom, we have enjoyed an online safety day with Mr Bailey and a workshop on feeling overwhelmed with the Be You team. We joined in enthusiastically on both occasions and our visitors were very impressed with our maturity during discussions.

What a brilliant start to year 2!

Miss Nicholson.

Year 2 News for October

What a busy month we have had since we last spoke!

Year 2 have been working hard on writing fact files all about meerkats as part of our English unit based on the story ‘Meerkat Mail’ by Emily Gravett. The children have researched facts about meerkats, wrote our facts into paragraphs using subheadings to organise our ideas and then we published our work. I am amazed at all of the hard work the children have put into their fact files and the outcome has been beautiful! Please ask your child their favourite meerkat fact, I bet they have loads to tell you!

In Maths, we have been working on adding and subtracting 1 and 10 to/from 2 digit numbers. We have also been looking at repeated addition and how we can use a variety of strategies to help us solve the problems. We even realised that repeated addition links to our times table knowledge! In our Winning with Number sessions we have been looking at the facts 2+6=, 2+7= and 3+6=. The children have enjoyed trying to beat me to the answers as they pop up on the board. So far, they have only won one round but I am sure they’ll be beating me all the time in a few weeks!

In art with Miss Patrick, we have been learning all about maps. We designed our own maps onto polystyrene tiles and rolled paint onto them. We then printed them onto a large piece of paper to create a collaborative class map. Miss Patrick was super impressed with our teamwork skills.

In PSHE, we have been looking at Families and Relationships. We have learned and talked about a variety of situations that may arise including unhappy friendships, manners and courtesy and gender stereotypes. We also had a lesson on loss and grief and I was super proud of how mature the children were in their discussions and thoughts about how we can remember people who we might have lost.

During our Wednesday PE lessons this half term, we have been dancing as part of our explorer’s unit. We have created our own mini routines and added expression and emotion to show the story. As the music played we had to try and keep to the rhythm and show controlled movements. The children performed their routines as part of this week’s lesson and they were all fabulous!

Have a great half term Year 2!
