Year 3Â
January News
What a busy start to 2026! The children came back refreshed and ready to learn after their Christmas holidays!Â
In English, we have written excellent persuasive advert scripts linked to the Iron Man. The children were enthusiastic about recording their ‘radio’ adverts on to the I Pads. We are now working on writing rhyming poems inspired by the Roald Dahl poem ‘The Crocodile and the Dentist’. In reading lessons, we are enjoying reading ‘The Abominables’ by Eva Ibbotson.Â
In Maths, we have focused on column additions and subtractions, working hard to master the tricky exchanges needed. We are now extending our learning about fractions.Â
We had an exciting time on DT Day when we learnt more about structures. We designed, made and evaluated some wonderful castles.
In Music, we had fantastic fun learning pentatonic scales on glockenspiels to help us to get ready to write our own dragon dance music to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
We have also begun to learn about the Romans in history and are really looking forward to our visit to Segedunum next week!         Â
February NewsÂ
February seems to have flown past, and we hope that everyone had a relaxing half term break.
We have really got stuck into our new text in English, which is ‘The True Story of the Three Little Pigs’ by Jon Scieszka. The wolf tells his side of the story and we are going to be using his style of writing to help us to write our own versions of the story of Little Red Riding Hood, with the wolf explaining that he had done absolutely nothing wrong!
In maths lessons, we are learning how to calculate with different types of amounts, so have been doing practical work on amounts of grams and kilograms, and cm and m. To help us practise using metres and centimetres we took turns doing standing long jumps and measuring each other’s jumps, which was lots of fun.
A big highlight before the break was our class trip to Segedunum Roman Museum in Wallsend. We had a brilliant time ‘training’ to be Roman soldiers, learning how to follow different commands and seeing what the soldiers would have worn. We also enjoyed exploring the Roman fort itself, seeing the different spaces that the different ranks of Roman soldiers lived in and imagining what life was like.Â
A whole range of activities have happened across the different subjects in our year 3 curriculum, including learning how to use the emergency service numbers in PSHE and getting to grips with block coding in computing lessons. We have continued to work hard in swimming and some of us enjoyed practising some life saving skills wearing our pyjamas in the pool this week!Â
We are looking forward to seeing what the other half of year 3 has to offer!
