Year 6 News - 24th May 2024  

Year 6 were superstars during SATs week! Every single child put in 100% effort and were not phased by what was put in front them or – if they were – they handled it with our school values of happiness and resilience! We began each day a little earlier to get everyone together and geared up for the day ahead with a breakfast, some music and warm-up revision. As a reward for their hard work not only on the week itself but those leading up to it, the children had an afternoon of rounders, a film morning as well as pizza party! Needless to say, there were smiles and enthusiasm all round.

Since then, in maths we have started a “Theme Park” maths project where we will be planning a theme park to a budget, calculating running costs as well as profit and loss. As the project continues, there will be opportunities to improve the theme parks in order to boost revenue. This project allows the children to strategise, decide how to spend money wisely as well as apply their calculation skills to potentially real-life situations. It has been really interesting to hear their conversations and decide how to get the most for their money as well as making their theme park appealing to customers.

The children have also taken part in an art day where they used sculpture to create art that represents themselves and their memories. They used their sketchbooks to make initial designs and explore the work of different artists, then brought those ideas into 3D using cardboard and other materials.

In other areas of the curriculum, we have done some drama based on our class novel Once; we have finished our unit of work on where energy comes from in geography; and have been learning how to say “I have” and “I have not” in French in relation to pets that we do/do not own.

Year 6 News - 28th June 2024   

The last half term of primary school is upon our Year 6s now!

They have continued to work incredibly hard over the last few weeks to create some unbelievable pieces of writing. They have created some very tense and beautifully described stories based on the short film “Alma” where they had the tricky task of writing in 3^rd person but from a particular perspective. The use of language and sentence structures for effect have been applied in just the most entertaining way. We then did some work on dialogue where – inspired by a single still image – the children created their mini narrative conveying their character through what they said and how they said it. Finally, we created a non-chronological report based on the creatures from the Arthur Spiderwicks series. To end the year, we are about to embark upon a project around the Shakespeare play, Romeo and Juliet.

In maths, the children have been practising becoming Theme Park tycoons where they have had to not only design a theme park on a budget but also work out running costs, taxes, interest as well as profit and loss. I will be keen to see some of our children developing their own businesses one day – perhaps even on The Apprentice or Dragon’s Den.

Our science lessons have had us exploring inheritance and adaptation and we will soon move onto looking at evolution and “survival of the fittest”. To explore adaptation, the class took part in a fun experiment where they had to explore which “duck” had the best beak-type for the islands and food sources on offer. By the end, it was clear to see that some “ducks” had adapted to a particular food source and could therefore only survive on one type of island, whilst other were adapted for a range of locations and food types.

In history, we have been developing our skills in analysing historical sources to see what they tell us about significant figures of the past in order to decide who fits the criteria to be placed on our £10 note. One lesson ended in a debate as to who was more significant: Alfred the Great or Elizabeth I.
