We’ve had a very busy and exciting week in Reception!
In maths, the children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring teen numbers. We’ve been learning that a teen number is made up of one ten and some ones. The children have used a range of resources, including ten frames, Numicon, number cards and cubes, to build and represent different teen numbers. It's been wonderful to see their understanding grow!
In literacy, we are now at the create stage of our writing journey. This week, the children have been reimagining the middle part of our class story, where the bear goes on an adventure. They came up with fantastic, creative ideas and turned them into detailed story maps. They have also been busy practising retelling their stories with a partner—such brilliant storytelling all round!
In DT, we’ve been designing and making our very own bookmarks using threading and sewing techniques. It was tricky at times, but the children showed incredible perseverance—just like Persevering Parrots! We’re so proud of their focus and determination. Well done, Reception!
We’ve also been practising for our upcoming Sports Day. It has been fantastic to see the children cheering each other on and showing great teamwork during the races.
This week, I’ve also been assessing the children in phonics. As a result, there are no new reading books this week while we prepare for some group changes after the half-term break. We’ll be in touch next week to let you know which phonics group your child will be in.
Home Challenge:
If you’d like to support your child’s learning at home, why not go on a teen number hunt together? See if you can spot teen numbers on doors, bins, or road signs. We’d love to see any photos you take—please feel free to share them on Tapestry!
Thank you, as always, for your continued support.
What a busy 4 day week we have had!
We have started our new book – The Everywhere Bear. This week, we explored Ellington to try and find a missing bear after receiving a letter at school explaining that a boy had dropped it on the way to school. Unfortunately, we could not find the bear. However, every place we visited around Ellington was written into a list, and we focused on using capital letters for place names.
In Maths, we have been exploring number bonds to 10. We used a variety of manipulatives, such as Numicon and 10 frames, to make number bonds in different ways. We then began recording these as number sentences. We have also been working on solving addition sentences independently during continuous provision.
In Art, we have been learning about threading and sewing. We’ve started using different techniques to create patterns on hessian, which the children have really enjoyed.
For Understanding the World, we learned lots about VE Day and had a brilliant time celebrating it. Thank you to all the parents who joined us for the picnic on the field—it was a wonderful day.
We have also been sorting out a new planter for some wild flowers and sunflowers to grow. It was hard work but the children have been excellent gardeners.
On Friday, we had a fantastic morning led by Mr. Bailey on unplugged technology. We used lots of new equipment, worked collaboratively, made patterns, and learned three new computing words: algorithm, debugging, and abstraction.
If you could continue to practise number bonds to 10 that’s would be fantastic.
Thank you
