April News

What a start we have made to April!

We hit the ground running with a new story in English, called ‘Leon and the Place Between’ which has really captured everyone’s imaginations. We loved wandering around the classroom exploring different parts of the magical circus in the story and creating new magical beings for Leon to meet and chat to in our writing!

We have moved our understanding of column addition and subtraction up a gear and we are now dealing with hundreds numbers exclusively. We are also really impressing the adults with our grasp of the 8 times table so far, which is our focus times table for this term. Great work everyone!

In science, we started the term by finishing our unit of work on light. This involved carrying out a carefully planned experiment to see how the distance between an object and a light source changed the shadow the object made. We have just embarked on a new unit all about plants, where we will get the chance to do lots of growing and observing different plants, discovering all sorts about how plants survive and their life cycles. Geography this week involved some field work, where we walked around Ellington looking for examples of physical and human features in the village, and why we might see these in particular types of places. The sunny weather helped a lot!

We are doing plenty of energetic PE lessons with Coach Charlie since we came back from the Easter holidays, as well as really impressing Mrs Richardson with our skills in spreadsheets in computing, and having some super discussions during our ‘Picture News’ assemblies. Great start to the term Year 3, keep it up!

May News

What a quick half term it has been!

In English, we have been working on the animation “The Girl and the Robot”. The children have designed some fabulous robots and have just completed writing
instructions about how to service them. In our reading lessons, we are continuing to enjoy the hilarious adventures of Hiccup in ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ by Cressida Cowell.

In maths we have explored formal methods for multiplication and division. We are now concentrating on further developing our understanding of fractions.

We are learning about plants in science. We are growing our own plants and have done some exciting experiments. We have also used counters to explore how water travels through the plant.

In music, we have learnt what ballads are and we have thought about actions and parts that we can use to tell the story. This example is the ballad ‘Space Odyssey’ by David Bowie. We hope you like it

We have been very active and had great fun in our PE lessons with Coach Charlie.

Enjoy a restful half term!

June News

It is hard to believe that we are already half way through June – and it has been jam packed with activities!

This week, we have been writing super imaginative stories set in the worlds that we imagine might exist at the top of Enid Blyton’s Faraway Tree – what an exciting topic, and we have had so many original ideas. Hopefully we can share these stories with you soon. In maths, we have been working on 2D and 3D shape recently, including a practical lesson where we used cubes, marshmallows and spaghetti to build different 3D shapes.

We really enjoyed our plants unit in science, and successfully grew a lot of sunflowers, which Mr Hodgson is now looking after in the greenhouse. Hopefully they will be planted out and looking beautiful as the flowers come out! We also became really confident talking about pollination of different flowering plants and also exploring how seeds are dispersed by making sycamore seed models. Here are a couple of QR codes to scan if you are interested in seeing what we’ve been up to!

A real highlight of June was the Bikeability morning, and the children taking part really impressed the instructors with their confidence and knowledge about the bikes. Sports Day was a great day as well and a huge well done to Jack E and Aria who were our top scoring boy and girl in year 3. A great attitude from everyone and thank goodness we dodged the rain!

Our Ancient Egypt topic has got off to a good start in history and later in the term we will have a themed art day linked with this topic, which is something to look forward to.Â
