April News

Its still all systems go here in Year 6 but their determination and enthusiasm is an example to us all.

In maths, we have been working on our skills with regards to line graphs: we have carefully read the x and y axis scales; looked at the gradient of the line itself and what that tells us; and reading questions closely to find out exactly what we’re being asked. We have also explored algebra and the pupils are now letting me know which topics they would like to revise in the remaining days before our tests. But fear not for we have exciting projects planned for when we’re done!

English has seen Year 6 creating a persuasive leaflet about their own theme park based on the world of Pandora from the film Avatar, designing rides and attractions, restaurants and even an on-site hotel! They have thought very carefully about the language to be used and the types of sentence structures found in persuasive writing, even employing the use of the subjunctive form. We are now moving on to writing a letter of complaint following a disastrous “visit” to these theme parks, which the children seem very excited about(because who doesn’t love a good whinge)!

In addition to our reading text – The Graveyard Book – in storytime, we have also started The Final Year. It is an amazing book written entirely in the form of poetry about a child – Nate – in his final year of Primary School. Already, the children have said how relatable they find aspects of the book to be and are always keen to hear more.

Excitingly, in PE, the children are taking part in a unit based on golf as well as working on their athletics skills ahead of Sports Day. Our PE coach has been nothing but complimentary about Year 6 and their efforts and attitude in these lessons, which is a delight to hear.

Keep up the incredible effort Year 6 – not long now and then there are some exciting times ahead as you reach the final half term of Year 6!

A huge “Well Done” to Year 6!

Each one of our pupils faced SATs week head-on and gave the assessments such a good go. As always, it turns out the week itself wasn’t that bad and the vast majority came out asking to do it again!

After all that, the hard work was well-rewarded with a surprise pizza feast, a game of rounders and a relaxing film afternoon. We also joined forces with Year 1 for a fun morning of bike-related activities to promote active travel to school. The children worked together to create courses to ride around and washed and decorated their bikes and scooters in order to “bling” their bike. It was lovely to see the children working to cooperatively and kindly together – the Year 6s really stepped-up to take care of their Year 1 partner.

Very excitingly, we have also begun initial preparations for our up-coming play at the end of the year: Gigglebox! The children are very excited for this already and performed some very impressive auditions in order to show off their abilities and talents.

I hope they have a wonderful half term break and come back ready for their FINAL half term of Primary School. We have so many activities and events to pack into 7 weeks that I’m sure it will fly by!

June News

Year 6 really have had an action-packed month with yet more to come!

Rehearsals are in full swing for our end-of-year production of Gigglebox and the children are playing their parts with gusto! We have really been working on considering voice projection and body-positioning so that the audience can see, hear and enjoy everything.

We also took part in a freestyle football and breakdancing session with record-breaking professionals Ash and Jack. The two pros did a short performance first to show off their skills – to a very enraptured audience – and then invited our fantastic pupils to practise some of them too. Year 6 rose to every challenge set with sheer enthusiasm and resilience because some of the skills were rather tricky! It was a delight to see them all so focused and having so much fun with a physical activity.

Speaking of physical activity, Sports Day was a huge success with Year 6 having the opportunity to show off their leadership skills as they led teams of pupils from across the school around different activities in the morning. The care and support they showed was lovely with lots of teachers commenting on how well they looked after the younger members of their team. As you saw, the afternoon races were action-packed and everyone gave 100% effort.

Just this week was our paddle-boarding/beach trip alongside Year 5. No matter which activity the children did, we all had a lovely afternoon doing something quite different to our usual school routine.

No time to relax now as there are still so many more activities to come!
